MPs urge Government to allow protests as thousands march over lockdown rules

The Government is coming under renewed pressure to ease coronavirus lockdown restrictions to allow protests to go ahead. More than 60 MPs and peers have signed a letter warning that allowing the police to criminalise people for protesting “is not acceptable and is arguably not lawful”. It comes as thousands of people marched through the centre of London in protest against lockdown restrictions.

SILKIE CARLO: Whether it's in relation to people expressing themselves about causes the individuals agree with or not that's really not the point. This is a universal right. And we have to defend everyone's right to protest.

I don't think we can call ourselves a democracy if the public don't have the freedom to protest.
