Mrs Brown’s Boys is returning to TV screens for a new series for the first time in a decade.

The hit comedy show – created by and starring Brendan O’Carroll – last aired a full series in 2013, although there have been several specials.

But it has now been confirmed that a series about matriarch Agnes Brown will air in September.

O’Carroll had previously told fans that more Mrs Brown’s Boys was coming, teasing in a statement: “Fasten your seatbelts and hold onto your hats!”

“This mini-series was actually planned for 2021,” he told fans.

“Having been thwarted twice, firstly by Covid-19 and then by a post Covid shortage of studios, it’s fantastic to, at last, have the chance to make it happen.”

Fans have shared their excitement at the news, with one person tweeting that it was “amazing”.

“Can’t wait,” said someone else.

However, others were less sure that they wanted another series.

“Just when you think life can't get any worse, the #BBC has announced #MrsBrownsBoys is coming back next month,” sniped one person.

“I have never understood why Mrs Brown's Boys was popular,” posted another viewer.

The comedy series first started airing back in 2011, with a second series and then a third following quickly.

However, from 2013 the show has only aired a long string of festive specials at Christmas.

The sitcom also spawned a spin-off chat show called All Round To Mrs Brown’s and the feature film Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie.
