🌱 MS Ag & Outdoor Expo Coming In Feb. + Trivia App Includes Jxn

Happy Tuesday, neighbors! Here's everything you need to know to get this day started. Here's what's going on today in town.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny and pleasant. High: 63 Low: 50.

Here are the top 3 stories today in Jackson:

  1. The Mississippi Ag and Outdoor Expo will take place in Jackson in February. The Expo will have items related to hunting, fishing, and agriculture. It will be at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds during the first weekend of the Dixie National Rodeo. (WJTV)

  2. A Jackson native released a trivia app for Mississippi residents. Warn Wilson Jr. worked with a developer to create the app that includes 5,000 trivia questions and 12 categories, one being the city of Jackson. He used his experience growing up in the city to create the questions for the Jackson category, along with knowledge from his friends and family. (The Commercial Dispatch)

  3. COVID-19 forced a Jackson homeless shelter to temporarily shut down ahead of a freezing night. Gateway Rescue Mission has been shut down because many staff members are out sick. The staff is still giving out bagged lunches and warm items, like sleeping bags and blankets, to the homeless. (WAPT Jackson)

Doing a "Dry January" or just looking for a flavorful alternative to regular cocktails? Here's a suggestion: try a non-alcoholic drink from our partners at Betera. Created by an award-winning chef from natural botanicals, Betera’s drinks come in 3 flavors — Ginger-Orange, Elderflower-Lime and Rhubarb-Hibiscus. We tried Ginger-Orange, and it was excellent — lightly effervescent, floral with a hint of bitterness and the sippability of a cocktail.

Betera is offering readers of the Daily a 15% discount on their first order: use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — you can try Betera here.

Today in Jackson:

  • Play. Eat. Learn. At Mississippi Children's Museum (5:30 PM)

From my notebook:

  • Community Animal Rescue & Adoption is humbled that many Jackson residents have thought of supporting CARA in honor of the great Betty White’s lifelong advocacy for animals. To recognize her love for animals and the contributions she made to better their lives, people everywhere are donating $5 to rescue groups in her name. (Facebook)

  • As crews continue to clear roads of snow and ice and temps begin rising, check the MDOT traffic app and MDOTtraffic.com for road conditions in your area. Continue to stay off icy roads and bridges while our crews work. (Facebook)

  • A top priority of Mississippi First is ensuring all kids have access to an excellent education, including one that provides great instruction in American history. As we remember Dr. King, let us remember his words about the purpose of education: "Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction." (Facebook)
