MS BBall: Union City splits with Concord; LMS faces Hastings; St. Charles wins while Bronson splits

CONCORD, MI. — The Union City MS Lady Chargers took to the road on Monday night to face off with the Concord Yellow Jackets in a night of girls hoops action.

Union City secured the split on the night, as the seventh grade Chargers remained unbeaten on the season with a win while the eighth grade team fell.

In the seventh grade contest it was the Union City Chargers using a huge second half to pull away for the 36-12 victory.

Concord jumped out to an early 5-4 lead with a pair of long jumpers in the early going, only to see Union City rattle off a 4-0 run to end the first quarter, taking the 8-5 lead after one.

The two teams stayed close throughout much of the second quarter, with the score standing at 10-9 in favor of Union City with just under three minutes left in the half. The Chargers ended the half on a quick 6-0 run, going on to hold a 16-9 lead at the half.

Union City completely controlled the second half of play, outscoring Concord 20-3 over the third and fourth quarters to pull away for the dominant 36-12 win.

Union City was led by Nala Payne with 19 points and seven steals while Emme Eyre added nine points, nine steals and six rebounds. Ellyse Flynn also had a big game, scoring six points while pulling down 10 rebounds and adding three steals.

Also chipping in for the Charger win was Jezelle Nagel with six rebounds; Aubrey Tennyson with two points and three rebounds; Emily Sander with two steals; and Alaina Fry with one steal and one assist.

With the victory the seventh grade Chargers improve to 6-0 on the season.

In the eighth grade contest the Union City Lady Chargers fell by the score of 42-32.

Union City was led on the night by Hannah Schofield who had 15 points. Also adding to the Charger effort was Attica Hoath with four points; Kayley Thomas with five points; Lydia Goodwin with two points; and Hayley Wood with two points.

The Union City Middle School Chargers will next see action on Wednesday when they host the Bronson Vikings.

Coldwater LMS Cardinals finish 1-2 versus Hastings in I-8 battle

COLDWATER, MI. — The Coldwater Legg Middle School girls basketball teams took to the hardwood Monday night to face off with Hastings in Interstate 8 action.

In the eighth grade “A” game the LMS Cardinals fell to Hastings by the score of 32-19.

Leading the Coldwater effort was Paisley Harvey with five points; Isabella Angevine with five points and four steals; TK Boyd with four points; Brooklyn Closson with seven rebounds; Aubrey Gebbink with five rebounds and two steals; Marie Powers with five rebounds; and Danika Harris with two steals.

With the loss the LMS eighth grade “A” team is now 1-4 on the season.

In the eighth grade “B” contest the LMS Cardinals fell to Hastings by the score of 20-18 in an absolute heartbreaker.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Audra Hall and Julianna Cowles with four points each while Aivry Chavez, Kinley Brown, Takyaa Hughes, Kaylee King, and Kaesyn Butler all scored two points each.

With the loss the eighth grade “B” team falls to 3-3 on the season.

In the seventh grade “A” game the Lady Cardinals rolled past Hastings for the 40-8 victory.

Leading the way for Coldwater was Audrina Bucklin with 18 points while Vandria Bucklin added 12 points and six steals.

Also adding to the LMS effort was Lainey VanAken with eight points; Harper Morrill with two points; and Adyson Qualls with six rebounds.

The LMS seventh grade “A” team is now 4-1 on the season.

The LMS Cardinals will next see action on Wednesday when they travel to Pennfield for more Interstate 8 action.

St. Charles remains unbeaten with nail biter versus Trinity Lutheran

BRONSON, MI. — The St. Charles Borromeo Cougars were in action on Monday night as they traveled to Bronson St. Mary’s to face off with Trinity Lutheran of Sturgis in middle school hoops action.

In the second game between these two quality teams in just four days it was once again the Cougars coming out on top, winning by the score of 33-31. St. Charles was able to secure the win with a huge bucket in the paint in the final minute of play, holding on for the victory.

Leading the St. Charles effort was Andrew Richards with 25 points, followed by Luke Aerts with four points; Matthew Waller with two points; and Aiden Adams with two points.

St. Charles will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Three Rivers to face Immaculate Conception beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Bronson MS splits with Homer

BRONSON, MI. — The Bronson MS Vikings split with Homer Monday night, going 1-1 in back-to-back games.

The Vikings took a razor thin win in the eighth grade game, winning 29-27, while the seventh graders fell to the Homer Trojans 15-8.

No individual stats were made available.
