Rep. Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, won the election to become the new Speaker of the House on Wednesday. The final vote was 220-209.

All 220 Republicans gave Johnson the leverage to surpass the 215-vote total that was required to win. All 209 Democrats voted for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the party's House leader.

Johnson was the first of four Republican nominees who secured support from within his party to win a majority of votes on the House floor.

He took the place of Rep. Tom Emmer, whose candidacy lasted less than five hours on Tuesday. Reps. Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan were the other two candidates, but they withdrew their names from consideration earlier in the process after garnering limited support from the party.

Rep. Johnson released a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating how the House Republican Conference is “united and eager to work.”

“As Speaker, I will ensure the House delivers results and inspires change for the American people. We will restore trust in this body,” Johnson continued. “We will advance a comprehensive conservative policy agenda, combat the harmful policies of the Biden Administration, and support our allies abroad. And we will restore sanity to a government desperately in need of it. Let’s get back to work.”

What Mississippi's representatives are saying:

According to congressional voting records, all of Mississippi’s three Republican representatives voted for Johnson on the fourth and final day. During the first three days of voting, the state's Republican representatives voted for Jordan.

The state's Democratic representative, Bennie Thompson, consistently voted for Jeffries over the four-day period.

Trent Kelly, Rep. for MS First Congressional District: Republican

Kelly's office released a statement in support of Johnson becoming the new speaker of the house.

"Speaker Mike Johnson is a strong leader who has a proven track record as a conservative who will fight for the American people," the release stated. "Mike is a great man who is honest, hardworking and principled. I look forward to continuing to work with Mike to get this county back on track."

Bennie Thompson, Rep. for MS Second Congressional District: Democrat

Shortly after the announcement of Johnson's election, Thompson posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, to state his views on the final ruling.

“After more than three weeks of dysfunction that left Congress paralyzed, House Republicans have followed former President Trump’s orders and made MAGA extremist Mike Johnson Speaker of the House,” Thompson wrote. “Shame on them!”

Michael Guest, Rep. for MS Third Congressional District: Republican

A statement from Guest's office on the new speaker vote was released demonstrating Guest’s approval of Johnson.

“Speaker Johnson is a humble, godly man who loves this great nation and who shares our conservative values. Mike will provide leadership to the House as we pass conservative legislation, rein in out-of-control spending, secure our Southern border, and provide critical support for the state of Israel,” the statement read. “Republicans must work diligently to support our Speaker as he leads the fight to protect our morals and values. I’m proud to have voted for Speaker Mike Johnson.”

Mike Ezell, Rep. for MS Fourth Congressional District: Republican

Before the announcement of Johnson’s election, Ezell took to social media stating his interest in the, at the time, Republican nominee.

“He and I have a lot in common, including our shared faith and our strong conservative values. He has my full support,” Ezell wrote on X.

Four hours later, Ezell came back to the platform extending his applause to Johnson.

“Congratulations, my friend! Looking forward to getting back to work alongside you and our entire conference,” the post read.
