Unanimous vote confirms design for new Marquette Sentinels logo

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) – The Marquette Area Public Schools Board unveiled the new high school mascot logo Monday at a special meeting held at the high school.

The Marquette Senior High School mascot has a new face, well sort of. The new logo was designed by Marquette Alum Matt Sia, who is now working at a graphic design firm in New York City. The design is a collaboration between the school board, current students and Sia.

The new logo includes many of the parts of several submissions that were voted on by the board and student council. This rollout marks the end of a nearly year-long, sometimes contentious process to fully transition to the new nickname, Marquette Sentinels. School Board President, Kristen Cambensy was pleased with the unanimous vote by the board.

“I love the new logo,” said Cambensy. “I think it’s unique, it’s modern. I think it’s something that no one else in the area has anything like this. It’s something that the students are going to rally behind.”

Even with a few board members initially against the idea of the name change, in the end, the board came together and presented a united front.

“To go from a 4-3 vote to a 7-0 vote and you know less than a year, that speaks a lot to the board and to the community, and everyone else involved,” said Cambensy.

The design for the new logo was done pro bono by Sia who offered his services to the school board upon hearing of the name change. Cambensy went on to say that graduating seniors have already requested to use the new mascot image during end-of-year graduation events.

The new logo will be a compliment to the traditional block M logo that has served as the symbol of the school since 1998 when the Native American Chief emblem was phased out.
