MSP: Semi hits bridge deck on US-131 near Wayland

LEIGHTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — There were lane closures on US-131 north of Wayland Wednesday morning after the top of a semi-truck hit a bridge deck.

The semi hit the 140th Avenue overpass in Leighton Township, Michigan State Police said in a social media post. No one was hurt.

A photo from MSP appears to show a scrape on the bridge deck and some concrete debris on the highway shoulder.

A News 8 crew later saw inspectors checking out the bridge. The Michigan Department of Transportation said it and the Allegan County Road Commission expected to be assessing the damage throughout Thursday.

MDOT told News 8 shortly after noon that all lanes of US-131 had reopened, but that the 140th bridge remained closed.

Bridge strikes like this are not unheard of. In 2018, the 100th Street bridge over US-131 was plagued by them as a number of trucks carrying tall loads failed to fit underneath. Construction added more clearance, which eased the problem.
