MSP: Woman dead after trying to save cat from house fire

SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman died after running into a burning home to rescue her cat, troopers say.

It happened around 12:50 p.m. Monday in Mason County’s Sheridan Township, according to the Michigan State Police.

Troopers say a 60-year-old Tennessee woman, who had recently moved to the Fountain area, called 911 because her home was on fire. The woman helped her dogs get outside safely. Then — despite instructions from dispatchers to stay outside and wait for firefighters — she ran back inside the burning home and tried to save her cat, according to MSP.

Troopers say when they arrived on scene, they couldn’t enter the home because the smoke, heat and flames were so intense. Firefighters arrived soon after, extinguished the flames and removed the woman from the home, according to MSP.

Though lifesaving measures were attempted, troopers say the woman died on scene. Her name was not released Tuesday.

Troopers are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call MSP at 231.873.2171.
