MINNEAPOLIS – Michigan State’s hockey team actually held a lead against No. 2-ranked Minnesota on Saturday night, an improvement from Friday’s night’s blowout loss.

But a 2-1 second-period edge didn’t hold in a 6-3 defeat to the Gophers that dropped the Spartans to .500 overall (13-13-2) and 7-9-2 in Big Ten play, heading into a big home weekend next Friday and Saturday against Notre Dame. MSU sits at No. 16 in the all-important Pairwise rankings, which largely determine the 16-team NCAA tournament field.

Goalie Dylan St. Cyr had 24 stops Saturday for the Spartans, who were outscored by the Gophers 14-3 over the weekend. Karsen Dorwart, Daniel Russell and Cole Krygier all scored for MSU on Saturday against a Minnesota team (20-7-1, 14-3-1) that’s the most talented the Spartans have faced this season in terms of heralded NHL prospects.
