Mt. Juliet business updates: Senior dog sanctuary, O’Charley’s, Citi Station, Cross Point

Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary in Mt. Juliet won’t seek to convert a nearby log home into an administrative office after a negative recommendation from the city's planning department.

The planning commission's negative recommendation on the rezone request and site plan was not binding and the Mt. Juliet City Commission could ultimately decide approval.

“We have always maintained a good relationship with the City of Mt. Juliet and the planning commission and have chosen not to go against their recommendation,” Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary co-founder Zina Goodin said.

“We understand that the goal of the planning commission is to grow Mt. Juliet in a planned and responsible manner. Although this is not the outcome we hoped for, we respect their decision.”

Old Friends wanted the log home for about seven employees to use. Old Friends operates and houses senior dogs at its Pawvillions campus the nonprofit moved into in 2021. Expansion at the existing campus will be explored, but there are no specific plans yet, Goodin said.

Old Friends is moving forward on a different expansion plan on Nonaville Road that will create a neighborhood of 11 dog cottages about 3.78 acres south of Pawvillions.

The cottages will primarily support dogs that outlive their owners, or owners move into senior care facilities. Or if owners are no longer able to care for pets.

Citi Station progress uncertain: A plan to build a 9,300-square-foot commercial building on just over 1.4 acres at the corner of North Mt. Juliet Road and East Division in Mt. Juliet continues to evolve. The proposed building includes bank, retail and restaurant uses with separate spaces for each, city officials said. Two drive-thru lanes are on the plans.

But the amount of development on the site and the impact on parking and access congestion were discussed during planning commission meetings. The plan has been deferred twice and wasn't on the August planning commission agenda.
