Mt. Zion rolls through Regional, but has more in mind

WCIA — Mt. Zion boys basketball took home its first Regional title since 2017 on Friday night, but the consensus among the Braves is that they wanted more.

“They are a confident group, they’ve always been that way,” head coach Dale Schuring said. “This is the type of games they look forward to. They step up in big moments and hopefully they got several more in them.”

MTZ is a No. 1 seed in the 3A Lincoln Sectional and won both games in the Danville Regional by an average of 26 points. The Braves have just one loss this season, to reigning 3A champions Metamora.

“We already had the confidence,” sophomore JC Anderson said. “We know that we can blow these teams out by 30, 40. We just got to play as a team and keep it rolling.”

“The confidence is really high but we know we got bigger goals,” junior Brayden Trimble said. “The confidence is there, we know we’re one of the best teams in the State.”

Next up, they play Rochester after the Rockets upset Glenwood in the Regional Final. The game is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Lincoln.
