MTR Station Damaged, Train Set on Fire Amid Hong Kong Protests

Masked individuals in Hong Kong attacked an MTR station on November 12, smashing the windows of a train and setting carriages on fire.

The violence capped off another day of protests in the city, that saw office workers line the streets in support of a flash protest held on Connaught Road and surrounding areas.

This footage shows people smashing the windows of a train at Sheung Shui Station and feeding a fire inside a carriage. The South China Morning Post reported that there were no passengers on the train at the time.

Police and protesters faced off across Hong Kong on Tuesday, including at the Chinese University, where riot police reportedly fired tear gas and projectiles as protesters set up road blocks and threw petrol bombs.

The clashes follow violence on Monday that saw a man set alight during a confrontation and a protester shot at point-blank range during a tussle with a police officer.

Anti-government demonstrations in Hong Kong have been ongoing since April, prompted by a proposed extradition bill that would have allowed criminal suspects to be transferred to mainland China. The bill was formally withdrawn in late October. Credit: SocRec via Storyful
