TOPEKA (KSNT)- Fresh off an AFC Championship win, the Kansas City Chiefs could see another win this year at the Kansas statehouse. Kansas lawmakers are taking up a bill that would make Chiefs license plates a reality for Kansas drivers.

Lawmakers held a hearing in the Senate Transportation Committee on Wednesday.

“It’s a dream come true for a lot of Kansas City Chiefs fans!” said Senator Kellie Warren, R-Leawood. “They have the license plate holder that says ‘Kansas City Chiefs’ around their Kansas license plate… but now, if they choose to… if this bill becomes law, they can have an actual distinctive Kansas City Chiefs license plate here in Kansas.”

Warren sits on the committee. She said she introduced the bill, SB 359, on behalf of a friend that works in the Kansas City Chiefs organization.

“You can imagine how excited I was to say yes!” she said.

“So often we see in headlines today is what divides us. But, a local sports team can really unify us,” she continued.

Just across the state line, Missouri drivers can already dawn Chiefs license plates. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are joining together to add Kansas to the list.

“There’s obviously a tremendous amount of energy across the Kansas City Metro region and across the entire state for the Chiefs, with them headed to the Super Bowl,” Sen. Ethan Corson, the top Democrat on the committee said. “I think this is a particularly appropriate time for us to be considering this.”

There’s no official mockup of the license plate design yet. If the bill passes this year, drivers could add them to their bumper by January 2025.

It costs $40 for a special plate application fee, according to the fiscal note. Drivers would have to pay an extra $40 to personalize the plates.

Money from the license plate purchases would go back to the Hunt Family Foundation, a non-profit run by the owner of the Chiefs.

“55% of that goes to communities in and near the Chiefs… to support children’s health and wellness… to support family health and wellness… to support civic community involvement… and also a portion of it is to preserve the legacy of the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL,” Sen. Warren said.

The Department of Revenue would collect the up to $5,000 fee for plate development, which is required to be paid by the sponsor of the bill.

According to the fiscal note, The Department of Revenue also estimates the enactment of SB 359 would increase its expenditures by $2,340 in FY 2025 for administrative costs related to designing and manufacturing of the new license plate.
