How much in damages did the May 12 derecho, Memorial Day storms cost Sioux Falls?
Cleaning up debris from storms that have swept through Sioux Falls in recent months has cost the city, but that cost is small change compared to events like the 2019 tornadoes or 2013 ice storm.
In a presentation at Tuesday's informational meeting, Emergency Manager Regan Smith told councilors that debris cleanup for the May 12 derecho had cost the city an estimated $200,000, while Memorial Day storms were estimated at $142,000.
Smith added damages from the storm that hit the city on July 5 were still being calculated.

For comparison, Smith said, debris management costs for the 2013 ice storm reached $8 million, while the three tornadoes that hit the city in late 2019 cost $1.5 million to clean up after.
Like those events, Smith noted the May 12 derecho had been declared a disaster by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which meant they would soon begin working with state and federal officials on eligible reimbursements for some of the associated costs.
Debris is also still being accepted at no cost through the end of the month at the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill, which is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
Wood debris may also be dropped off at a site north of 12th Street and Lyon Boulevard, which will operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through July 31, or at Mueller Pallets, which is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and from 7 a.m.to noon Saturdays.
