The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is expected to have record enrollment for the 2023-2024 academic year, welcoming about 35,000 students from around the world.

For incoming and returning students, tuition costs and fees are a major consideration. It's part of the planning process to know just how much students and their families will pay toward a degree.

We've compiled questions and answers about tuition, fees, room, board and more for those who are considering attending Tennessee's flagship university this fall and beyond.

How much is University of Tennessee tuition?

Tuition costs at the Knoxville campus depend on whether the student lives in Tennessee when they apply or lives in another state.

In-state undergraduate tuition is $11,332 per academic year, and out-of-state tuition is $29,522, but that amount does not include additional fees.

Students qualify for in-state tuition if they have lived in Tennessee for a year and have graduated from a Tennessee high school.

These tuition figures, of course, are for the average undergrad student. It is higher if a student is a part of one of these four colleges: engineering; architecture and design; nursing, or business.

Administrators are working to hold down costs. This is the fourth year in a row that tuition has stayed stable at UT.

How much does the University of Tennessee cost a year?

In addition to tuition, several fees are added on to the cost of attending the university.

There is a small increase in general fees starting this semester. These include transportation; facilities; student programs and services; technology, and library fees. Fees will cost in-state students $2,152 and out-of-state students $2,452.

Additional costs can be calculated using the university's own undergraduate budget tool. It provides estimates for costs such as on-campus housing and meal plans. These expenses are the same whether students are in-state or out-of-state.

The listings estimate annual housing costs at $8,188, food at $4,312 and books and supplies at $1,598. Some students might have additional costs that don't come from the university itself, including transportation at $3,054, personal expenses at $3,042 and loan fees at $232.

The total cost per year with room and board comes out to $33,910 for in-state students and $52,400 for out-of-state students, according to the undergraduate budget.

How much does it cost to go to the University of Tennessee for four years?

In-state students would end up paying $135,640, while out-of-state students would pay $209,600 over four years.

This estimate uses the figures provided through the undergraduate budget tool and does not account for possible fee or tuition increases or a rise in cost of living expenses.

On the flip side, that total doesn't factor in scholarships or financial aid, either. To apply for help, students must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form and determine what scholarships they might be eligible to receive or apply to receive.

Students can receive various financial aid loans and gifts including scholarships for specific colleges, UT fellowships and external scholarships.
