How Much Will Monsanto Spend to Kill Washington’s GMO Labeling Law?

Washington State’s GMO labeling-law battle is getting increasingly intense, and as is the case with any modern political debate, money is fueling both sides of the argument. Lots of money.

As was the case in California’s Proposition 37 campaign, biotech companies are funneling cash into Washington to support the no on I-522 side of things. According to an infographic published by the Cornucopia Institute, Bayer Crop Science, DuPont, Dow Agrosciences, Grocery Manufactures Association and, of course, Monsanto, have all pitched in. Dow’s contribution of just $23,531 is at the low end of the spectrum, just a slight percentage of the $4,834,411 Monsanto has kicked in—the top donation.

If you aren’t a Washingtonian voter who can cast a ballot on November 5, then you might want to know what companies are funding the pro-labeling side of things—and Cornucopia has those listed too. There are the usual suspects, like Organic Valley and Center for Food Safety, who are joined by some less obvious donors, such as the gelato-maker Ciao Bella.

So spend appropriately.
