How much rain has fallen in Corpus Christi? Here are rainfall totals, forecast

Despite ongoing drought conditions in the Coastal Bend, last month marked the third-wettest August since 1887.

Weeks of scattered showers contributed more than 11 inches of rain near the Corpus Christi International Airport in August, though it’s likely more fell closer to the bay, according to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi.

It’s not unusual to receive such large amounts of rain in a short time, according to meteorologist Eric Forinash. A tropical system in August led to several days of rain across the area at the peak of hurricane season.

Over the weekend, portions of Corpus Christi received up to 5 inches. Port Aransas received the most rain in the Coastal Bend with an estimated 6 to 8 inches since Saturday.

Each county in South Texas received at least 2 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service.

“Some areas are getting more than others, but overall it seems like some areas got a lot in August and those that didn’t got quite a bit this past weekend,” Forinash said.

Rain is expected to continue Wednesday night or possibly Thursday. Temperatures will rise through the week with highs around 95 and nightly lows around 70-80.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw some areas get up to an inch, but generally less than an inch of rain over the next few days throughout the week,” Forinash said.

Corpus Christi was previously in the lowest stage of drought, but Forinash said he expects drought conditions to improve across the area. Area reservoirs were 51.9% full on Tuesday, compared to 42.4% last month. Lake Corpus Christi was 79.6% full.

“There should be a little more increase in the lake levels,” Forinash said. “There’s going to be some more rainfall going down into the lake, so it’s beneficial rain.”
