How much would your RG&E bill go up under proposed rate settlement filed by the company?

Rochester Gas & Electric Corp. and New York State Electric and Gas announced Wednesday that the companies have filed a proposed rate settlement case for their gas and electric services.

Under the proposed plan, RG&E electric rates would increase 16% over a three year span and gas would rise 10.9% in the same timeframe. Comparatively, NYSEG electric rates would rise 22.1% over a three years span and gas would rise 6.1%.

The companies, both under the umbrella of parent company Avangrid Inc., filed the proposed settlement with the New York Public Service Commission.

According to the Avangrid, the proposed settlement will enable more than $5 billion in investments - including $2.1 billion to improve aging infrastructure and to better prepare for storm resiliency with increasing funding for tree trimming, $1 billion to improve customer service efforts and $900 million to lower carbon emissions.

“Our mission is to serve our customers; raising rates is an unavoidable step we must take to continue to meet customers’ current and future energy needs," Patricia Nilsen, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E, said in a news release.

The cost of doing business has increased, she said, as has the investment "necessary to realize the clean energy future our stakeholders expect."

“Our customers want improvements to our aging grid for better reliability and to meet their household energy needs, as well as to support business development in New York, including more electric vehicles on the road and decreases in natural gas usage," she said. "These investments will help us realize those goals.”
