How much snow did Des Moines get Thursday? Top snowfall reports in Iowa

Des Moines was under a winter weather advisory through Thursday evening, while some parts of southern Iowa are under a winter storm warning, according to the National Weather Service.

Most snow was expected to fall before 4 p.m. in Des Moines, meaning your evening commute Thursday may have been impacted. The NWS says wind and snow will cause less than a mile of visibility during rush hour.

As of Friday morning, the NWS reported snowfall totaled 5.6 inches at the Des Moines Airport, but a few places in the Des Moines metro reported higher totals.

Over the past 24 hours, here are the biggest snow totals reported so far as of 9:50 a.m. Friday:

  • 11.5" of snow was reported in SW University Heights

  • 10.5" of snow was reported in SSW Williamstown, Elmira and ENE Iowa City

  • 10" of snow was reported in Oskaloosa.

  • 9.5" of snow was reported in Lowden and Lovilia

  • 9" of snow was reported in Bussey and Lorimor
