How much snow has Des Moines gotten? Top counts from across the state

Blizzard conditions and heavy snow greeted Iowans to kick off the weekend. The Iowa Department of Transportation said most major roadways in the state were treacherous for driving.

You can check road conditions on Iowa 511 and see road cameras before you decide whether to travel.

Extreme cold and dangerous wind chills will follow through the coming week.

Here's a look at totals from the latest storm:

How much snow did Des Moines receive?

As of Saturday morning, the National Weather Service reported 10 inches of fresh snow at Des Moines International Airport.

At the National Weather Service's office in Johnston, 9.4 inches were recorded.

Allan Curtis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said that with wind blowing the newly fallen snow around, it is difficult to get an exact count.

"The caveat is the wind," Curtis said. "The wind makes it extremely difficult to get a true, 100% confident measurement."

He said most counts are submitted by the public or by the NWS's volunteer network.

Elsewhere in the metro area:

  • 8 inches were recorded in Ankeny.

  • 8-10 inches were recorded in Indianola.

  • 8-11 inches were recorded in Waukee.
