How much snow fell in Sioux Falls? It's now been one of the top 5 snowiest winters to date

A winter storm is moved through Sioux Falls, bringing snow, road and school closures and freezing wind chills. As the skies clear up and snow stops dumping across southeast South Dakota, the NWS let us in on a little secret: It has been snowier than normal this winter.

Sioux Falls is so far tied with the record from 1961-1962 for the third most snowiest winter to date at 56.4" of snow total. Similarly, Mitchell is also breaking records through Feb. 23rd as the fourth snowiest winter they've seen to date.

As for just this blizzard, Sioux Falls saw a total of 12.6 inches of snow, and winds reached a peak of 44 miles per hour, according to the NWS.

Which South Dakota cities have seen the most snow so far?

Over the past 36 hours, here are the biggest snow totals reported so far as of Thursday at 5:50 p.m.:

  • 16" of snow was reported in Huron.

  • 15" of snow was reported in O'Neil Pass.

  • 14" of snow was reported in Salem.

  • 13.7" of snow was reported in Hartford and Lake Cochrane.

  • 13.6" of snow was reported in Chamberlain.

  • 13.5" of snow was reported in Bruce.

Snow totals Wednesday in Sioux Falls

According to the National Weather Service's Daily Climate Report Thursday, Sioux Falls recorded 4.7 inches of snowfall on Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service's Daily Climate Report Wednesday, Sioux Falls recorded 3.9 inches of snowfall on Tuesday. On Tuesday evening 1.2" of snow was reported.
