Bundle up: Lake-effect snow warning, freezing cold in Erie's Tuesday forecast

Add lake-effect snow to the bitter cold hovering around Erie.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a lake-effect snow warning until 7 p.m. Tuesday for northern Erie County. Additional snowfall of one to three inches is expected to bump up storm totals to 4 to 8 inches.

That comes atop a wind chill advisory that runs from Tuesday at 10 p.m. through Wednesday at noon for most of northwestern Pennsylvania.

Lake-effect snow, low wind chills for Erie County

The weather service calls for 3 inches to 6 inches of lake-effect snow mainly near and north of Interstate 90. The heaviest snows are expected from Platea to Findley Lake, New York, and especially north of a line from Harborcreek Township to Findley Lake.

Forecasters at 6:30 a.m. were uncertain how far inland the snow might eventually extend.

Winds will gust as high as 35 mph.

Tuesday's high temperature will be around 20 and the low Tuesday night near 6. Wind chills as low as 15 below zero are expected during the wind chill advisory period.

Crawford, Venango, Mercer and Forest also are under wind chill advisories during the 10 p.m.-to-noon period, and Warren County until Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Winter weather advisory in Chautauqua County, New York

The weather service in Buffalo has a winter weather advisory in place for Chautauqua County, New York, until Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Snow accumulation of 4 inches to 7 inches is possible. The high temperature in Jamestown will be around 16 and the nighttime low near 2, with wind chill values near 20 below zero.
