Mukwonago senior running back Wynn Stang was named the 2022-23 Gatorade Wisconsin Football Player of the Year in a press release Friday morning.

Stang is the first Wisconsin Football Player of the Year to be chosen from Mukwonago High School, and the fourth-consecutive honoree from the greater Milwaukee area. Franklin’s Myles Burkett won the award for 2021-22, with Muskego’s Hunter Wohler and Alex Current taking the honor in 2020-21 and 2019-20, respectively.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program recognizes players across the 50 states and the District of Columbia that sanction high school sports including football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball and boys track and field. A National Player of the Year is also awarded in each sport.

The honor for Stang joins a host of recognitions in postseason awards after a senior campaign for Mukwonago highlighted by 2,756 rushing yards and 42 touchdowns. The 6-foot-1, 191-pound back rushed for 846 yards and 13 touchdowns during Mukwonago’s run to the WIAA Division 1 state title game, where he broke his collarbone on the third play. He was named 2022 MaxPreps.com State Player of the Year, the Elroy Hirsch Award winner as the state’s top senior running back and an AP All-State First Team member while narrowly losing a runoff vote for player of the year.

The release also recognized Stang’s community service efforts through his local chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as well as his 3.50 GPA in the classroom as examples of “high achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.”

Stang remains undecided on a college selection at the time of the press release. He has reported preferred walk-on offers from Wisconsin and Purdue.
