A mulch fire in Thousand Palms north of Interstate 10 sent smoke into the air Saturday, but no homes or businesses were endangered.

CalFire reported a 100-by-200-foot mulch pile was on fire just after 3:30 a.m. in the 29-000 block of Rio Del Sol in Thousand Palms, but said there were no injuries with the fire and no likely spread of the fire. CalFire added that the fire and smoke would be visible for “several hours.”

There was no information released on what started the fire.

Fire crews remained onsite throughout the day even after the fire was completely contained, again saying the fire was producing smoke but not impacting any structures. Just before 2 p.m. CalFire reported its crews were handing over the scene to the property owner, who would continue to work on the smoldering mulch with heavy equipment.

“Smoke may still be visible; no threat to the community. Roadway is open and shelter in place order lifted,” CalFire reported in 1:55 p.m. Twitter post.
