Multi-agency meth bust uncovers $2M-worth of methamphetamine

The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office announced a major meth bust Friday of more than $2 million in collaboration with Oklahoma City police in mid-March.

Around 11:35 a.m. on March 19, sheriff's deputies with the multi-agency Criminal Interdiction Team of Central Oklahoma stopped a white Honda Pilot for several traffic violations near Interstate 40 and Portland Avenue in Oklahoma City.

Deputies said they talked casually with the occupants of the vehicle, who "were overly nervous during the traffic stop," according to an activity report, and who gave differing reasons for traveling cross-country.

"After becoming suspicious and believing that the individuals in the vehicle were involved in criminal activity, a K9 was used to screen the exterior of the vehicle," Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III said. "The K9 gave positive alert to the odor of narcotics, and that is very important."

Deputies conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle and found plastic tubs containing methamphetamine in the back of the car. Officials said the occupants of the vehicle would not speak with investigators about the drugs found in their vehicle.

The total weight of the methamphetamine was 101 pounds, with an estimated worth of around $2.4 million, according to Johnson. Deputies said they also found 340 grams of marijuana and six MDMA pills in the car.

"This methamphetamine is a very large load that we caught, and we're doing this all the time," Johnson said. "And so I think it's very appropriate to let the public know this is what we're getting and this is what law enforcement is really trying to take off the roadways."

The occupants of the vehicle were booked into the Oklahoma County jail on drug trafficking and possession complaints, and the vehicle was impounded by Arrow Wrecker Service.
