Multi-vehicle accident in Kansas leaves 2 people dead, 3 others injured

Two men have died in a collision involving five vehicles on U.S. 50 west of Emporia on Wednesday.

They were identified as 29-year-old Ryan Miller of Independence, Missouri and 32-year-old Jacob Suenram of Lawrence, Kansas Highway Patrol crash logs show.

A 4-year-old in the car with Suenram was taken to an Emporia hospital then flown to Children’s Mercy with critical injuries, Trooper Chad Crittenden said.

The incident was reported around 6:15 p.m. along U.S. 50 at milepost 340 about four miles west of Emporia in Lyon County, the log report said.

Travis Edwards, 46, of Marysville was heading east on U.S. 50 in a semi truck. Right behind him was another semi truck driven by 32-year-old Quintia Rowe of Norfolk, Virginia, the crash log said.

Heading west on U.S. 50 was 67-year-old Timothy Hoekstra of Chino, California and a passenger in a 2014 Subaru CrossTrek. Behind him was Miller in a 2019 Jeep Renegade. Behind Miller was Suenram in a 2017 Ford Escape, according to the crash log.

For unknown reasons Edwards went left of the center line and struck Hoekstra’s CrossTrek. Hoekstra spun counterclockwise into the eastbound lane of U.S. 50 and struck Rowe’s semi, the report said.

Edwards continued east on U.S. 50 still over the center line and struck Miller and Suenram, who both died at the scene of the crash, the report read.

Edwards, Hoekstra and his passenger, 69-year-old Judith Hoekstra of Chino, California were all taken to Newman Regional Health with suspected minor injuries, the log said.

Rowe did not report any injuries.
