Multiple adults banned from Vancouver school after ‘physical confrontation’ with student

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An argument spanning multiple days that unfolded on the grounds of Jason Lee Middle School in Vancouver, culminated in a “physical confrontation” involving adults and a student in which law enforcement had to intervene.

The trouble began last week on Thursday, Feb. 1, and was described as “a problem between two students that had escalated to the point that parents and family members were involved and, at times, angrily shouting at staff and students during our parent drop-off and pick-up processes,” according to a letter addressed to students’ families from Jason Lee Middle School Principal Megan Vickery.

The arguing didn’t cross the threshold of becoming physical until Friday, Feb. 2, according to the letter. This physical fight occurred “between some of the involved family members and one of the students,” the letter said. On both days, school administrators called the Clark County Sheriff’s Office for assistance. The principal said deputies were on campus “within one minute” of Friday’s call and helped to stop the physical fight that was unfolding.

Vickery said the involved students would be “disciplined as appropriate” and that the next steps were discussed with deputies about the involved adults.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson for Jason Lee Middle School told KOIN 6 News via email that CCSO cited the adults involved and issued no trespass notices to them.

“We have not dealt with any issues with these particular individuals prior to what is described in the communication,” the spokesperson said.

School officials said they take matters such as this very seriously, that they would be increasing the number of safety officers on campus this week and that they would follow any advice from law enforcement about the best way to proceed.
