1 dead after multiple crashes that closed part of Interstate 80 in Centre County

At least one person died after a spate of crashes during rush hour Thursday along Interstate 80 in Centre County, a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesperson said.

The eastbound lanes of the major highway were closed for about three hours between Snow Shoe and Lamar after three vehicle crashes were reported within about eight miles of each other.

The first involved a semitrailer and a minivan, PennDOT spokesman Tim Nebgen said. No injuries were reported.

Two semitrailers were involved in a secondary crash. It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured.

At least one person died when a van crashed into the back of a semitrailer, Nebgen said. It was not immediately clear if anyone else was injured.

The about 27-mile stretch of highway was closed at about 4:20 p.m. and reopened at about 7:30 p.m., according to PennDOT. Traffic was detoured to state Route 150 and Route 64.
