Lanes on Interstate 64 have reopened, as state police continue to investigate crashes

Virginia State Police are investigating two crashes Wednesday that had closed multiple lanes on Interstate 64 during rush hour.

According to an update from state police spokesperson Sgt. Michelle Anaya, a two-vehicle crash just after 2:30 p.m. in James City County resulted in a fatality. The crash happened at mile marker 233 on I-64 eastbound.

State police are also investigating a second crash involving multiple vehicles near Shell Road in Chesapeake, prompting a closure of all westbound lanes of I-64 earlier Wednesday.

As of at least 8 p.m., lanes on I-64 westbound have reopened, according to traffic cameras and the Virginia Department of Transportation’s real-time traffic map. A tweet from the Hampton Roads District of VDOT said eastbound lanes in James City County have reopened.
