Firefighters battled 4 alarm fire at high-rise building in Govt. Center for second time this summer

Two Boston firefighters were hospitalized after crews worked effortlessly to contain the fire in a high-rise building at Government Center.

According to Boston Fire, flames at 1 Congress Street spread across multiple floors, traveling through duct works and shafts. A fourth alarm was ordered shortly before 1:00 p.m.

The fire, reported about 11:45 a.m., started in a utility shaft on the building’s sixth floor. The fire extended up all the way to the 25th floor.

At least two firefighters were treated and taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation after crews spent the day traversing dozens of flights of stairs to get at the flames.

Chief Paul Burke said that thousands of feet of hose line were used to get water in the building.

Saturday’s high-rise fire comes after crews responded to 1 Congress Street back on June 24 for plumes of smoke pouring out of the side of the building.

In both cases, construction crew workers on-site were able to safely evacuate.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
