Paris Hill firefighters were first called to a structure fire on Shanley Road at 6:44 p.m., department public information officer Jeff Pilipczuk said Saturday. The fire started in the attached garage, but quickly spread to the house, and all other surrounding departments were called upon arrival, he said.

"We're a small department ourselves," he said. "Whenever you have a structure fire you have to get as many people as possible."

Paris Hill, Willowvale, Sauquoit, Clayville, Cassville, Clinton, Deansboro, New Hartford, Waterville and Oriskany Falls were among the departments at the scene, Pilipczuk said

High winds and low temperatures complicated the response, as winds caused the fire to spread quickly and water from hoses froze on the roads, Pilipczuk said. The fire was under control within a couple hours, with the last firefighters leaving the scene around midnight.

At least two people lived at the house, and one person was inside at the time, but no occupants or firefighters were hurt or killed, Pilipczuk said. The cause is currently unknown.

The structure is a total loss. The Paris Hill Fire Department is collecting monetary donations for the occupants and plans to gather clothing as well, Pilipczuk said. Donations can be sent to the department at 2845 State Route 12 Sauquoit with the memo "Attention Shanley Road Fire." Information on clothing sizes needed will be posted to the department's Facebook page.
