Multiple departments respond to basement fire in the City of Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Crews responding to a basement fire temporarily blocked an intersection in the City of Elmira Thursday evening.

According to an 18 News reporter on the scene, fire personnel were called to the scene of the fire on the 500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15. The Elmira Police Department closed the road between Franklin Street and South Avenue.

One dead, one airlifted in Bradford County car crash

The Elmira Fire Department was on the scene tending to the fire. Smoke could be seen coming from the basement of the residence, but no flames were visible. There was also a strong odor of smoke.

18 News spoke with a neighboring resident who said all of the people inside the home at the time of the fire were able to escape.

It is unknown at this time what caused the fire. This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
