Multiple people suffer heat exhaustion at Broward J’ouvert Festival, officials say

Multiple people possibly suffered heat exhaustion at the J’ouvert Festival in Lauderhill on Saturday, officials said.

Around 2 p.m., Lauderhill Fire Rescue was treating multiple people for heat exhaustion, possibly linked to alcohol, at the festival, Broward County Regional Communications’ dispatch said.

Paramedics and police were already standing-by at the festival when people became ill.

The J’ouvert Festival, at 3700 11th Place, is held annually and celebrates Caribbean culture. It is run by a business called Miami Carnival.

A request from comment from the business was not immediately given.

According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, close to 50 people were evaluated by paramedics and 23 were hospitalized.

The patients were taken to Florida Medical Center, Broward Health Medical Center, Westside Regional Free Standing Emergency Room and Westside Regional Hospital.

While South Florida is not under heat advisories or warnings, the heat index was around 95 degrees with temperature highs up to 90 degrees.
