Multiple Products Made With Jif Peanut Butter Are Recalled

The peanut butter may be contaminated with salmonella

Snack cups and trays with celery and Jif peanut butter are some of the products involved in the recall.

The recall of several varieties of Jif peanut butter announced last week has expanded to include products that are made with Jif. The peanut butter may be contaminated with salmonella, and it has been linked to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened 14 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Several convenience stores, supermarkets, and food companies across the country have recalled products that contain the Jif peanut butter. These include:

7-Eleven: Celery with Peanut Butter; Peanut Butter Snack Pack.

Albertsons Companies: Store-prepared items sold at ACME, Albertsons, Albertsons Market, Amigos, Andronico’s Community Markets, Balducci’s, Carrs-Safeway, Haggen, Eagle, Jewel-Osco, King’s, Lucky, Market Street, Pak ’N Save, Randalls, Safeway, Shaw’s, Star Market, Tom Thumb, United, and Vons. These include snack packs, trail mix, and baked goods.

Circle-K: Apple Pretzel Peanut Butter Snack Pack.

Coblentz Chocolate Company: Assorted Creams; Buckeye Fudge, Chocolate Peanut Butter Caramel Corn, Deluxe Assortment Gift Boxes; Fudge Sampler; Graham Peanut Butter Sandwich; Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup; Oversized Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, Oversized Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup; Oversized Peanut Butter Pretzel Cluster; Peanut Butter Fudge; Peanut Butter Spread; Peanut Butter Truffle; and Ritz Peanut Butter Sandwich.

The recall notices on the Food and Drug Administration’s website (linked individually above) have more information, including package sizes and contact information for each manufacturer.

“Peanuts and peanut butter can become contaminated with salmonella from the environment or during the production process from the machinery,” says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food safety research and testing at Consumer Reports. “Foods contaminated with salmonella look and smell normal. If you have any of the products involved in this recall, do not eat them.” Throw them away or return them to the store where you bought them.
