Mum Copies THAT Naked Selfie, Calls Out Facebook On Breastfeeding Censorship

A mum-of-four has copied Kim Kardashian’s divisive naked bathroom shot by posing nude while breastfeeding her 11-month-old baby. Yes we’re back on that selfie. But wait, before you click off and go put the kettle on, there’s a rather important sentiment behind this latest replica.

Birth photographer Lacey Barratt from Melbourne, Australia took to her various social media channels to share her version of the KK picture that broke the internet. The images shows the mum-of-four naked while breastfeeding her youngest child and the accompanying caption “‪#stopbodyshaming‪ its the same body if there is a baby attached or not,” was designed to call out social media on the double standards of body-shaming.

“I just felt the need to say this. As a woman who actively fights Facebook and other social media platforms for censoring birth and breastfeeding images, this has bothered me,” Lacey wrote in a short essay on social media.

“The double standard of body shaming I have seen because Kim Kardashian posted a censored nudie of her body. WHO CARES?! It is a woman’s body!! Only difference is a baby isn’t hanging off her boob…so does that now make it inappropriate? No way!”

“A woman’s body should be celebrated, regardless if there is a baby on the breast, or simply because, one feels like it. Lets be very very careful not to have the same double standard facebook has.”

“Neither one of these images are sexual. Just two women’s bodies at two very different times in their post partum and pregnancy walks.”

Since posting to her various channels, the picture and its accompanying message has been shared, liked and commented on hundreds of times. But though the majority of the comments are largely positive, it seems both her decision to pose naked, and her stance on body shaming, has sparked a debate.

“Live and let live! We shouldn’t be body shaming it’s just adding more and more to a woman’s insecurities about her own body. If people don’t agree with something let it go, it’s not hurting you,” wrote one supporter.

“This is actually the most intelligent, beautiful & truthful thing I’ve ever read on Facebook! No word of a lie! If only there were more woman and men who thought as you do,” added another.

But others weren’t quite so appreciative of the selfie or the sentiment behind it.

“I hate this myself. Ugh… I feel like this takes the breastfeeding movement a step back,” said one commenter on Facebook.

“Birth and breastfeeding photos are beautiful… This is just two women naked. Have some modestly and keep your naked self for your loved ones eyes only. The internet doesn’t need to see it,” added another.

“It’s perfectly fine to love your body and to breastfeed etc etc but why does the world need to see it? Some things should stay sacred or between you and your spouse not spread through social media, you wouldn’t go naked to a party with friends?” wrote one opposer.

Lacey addressed the criticism directly posting a comment on her Facebook page.

“I respect everyone’s viewpoint to agree and disagree,” she wrote. “I appreciate the people who have politely disagreed. I am not here for a debate. I think I made my view point clear enough in my post. Rock on beautiful mammas.”

This isn’t the first time the birth photographer has tackled the subject of body-shaming. Her recent photo series the Humans Uncensored Project is a celebration of the human body, in all it’s wobbly, messy glory and she has previously spoken out about social media’s obsession with censoring women’s bodies, particularly Facebook’s odd discomfort when it comes to photos of childbirth and, even more bafflingly, breastfeeding.

The mum-of-four isn’t the only one to replicate Kim’s famous selfie in a bid to tackle body-shaming. Last month we reported on mum blogger Constance Hall, who also imitated the naked shot to draw attention to the subject. And received a similar mixed response.

Whether you love or loathe the original selfie and the copy-cats it has since spawned, you can’t deny it has provided an important platform for discussion on body issues, no matter your own beliefs.
