A mother of two has inspired social media users with her fruit and vegetable preparation trick, which involves soaking them in bicarbonate of soda (also known as baking soda).

Posting in a budgeting Facebook group, she revealed her meal prepping ritual – which involves filling her sink with water and a sprinkle of the kitchen cupboard essential before adding fruit and vegetables in to soak.

The actual vegetable chopping for meals only takes about 10 minutes. The soaking/drying isn’t hands on so you can do other tasks while you go.”

One person wrote: “You are who I want to be when I grow up.”

Another added: “I wish I was half as organised as you. So inspiring. Thank you.”

This woman isn’t the only person to adopt this trick. Mona Kay, founder of The Organising Ninja, swears by the trick.

She says: “I use baking soda in almost everything; laundry, face masks and even cooking! It is also an effective cleaning agent. It is an excellent odour absorber and disinfectant.

“I soak my fruits and veggies in a bowl of water, baking soda and salt for about half an hour. It helps to remove pesticides and dirt.

“Then I use a silicone sponge for a gentle scrub and voila! Squeaky clean fruits and vegetables ready to be munched with no doubts!”

What’s more, a study by the US Department of Agriculture found a baking soda wash removes two main pesticides from the surfaces of apples.
