This Woman’s Getting Stick For Following A Plant-Based Diet While Pregnant: Is It Such A Big Deal?

The hashtag #plantbased wouldn’t normally be considered controversial. But when Lori Jane Anthony posted a picture of her baby bump alongside the hashtag a few weeks ago, it caused a fair few rumblings in the social media world.

That’s because the mum doing the posting had previously come under fire for maintaining her extreme vegan diet while pregnant, and the picture and accompanying caption was proof she was continuing her strict plant-based regime while now pregnant with her second baby.

The lifestyle blogger from the Gold Coast, Australia was criticised during her first pregnancy for sticking to her fruit-based diet, which saw her drinking raw juices every day, avoiding meat and dairy, and sometimes consuming up to 20 bananas in one day, with some accusing the mum-to-be of being ‘irresponsible’ and ‘narcissistic.’

The 27-year-old, who’s Instagram account has some 380,000 followers, said she took up the extreme regime because she was fed up eating unhealthy foods and also because her ‘party lifestyle’ had started to take its toll on her body.

“It wasn’t for weight loss or for a quick fix,” she said at the time. “I was internally really sick; I was killing myself slowly. If I’d kept living that lifestyle I would have ended up with a disease like cancer or early ageing. So giving up that food was really quite simple for me.”

And when the blogger gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Rowdy Nash, in March 2014, she hit back at critics who’d attacked her decision to continue her regime while pregnant saying that the proof her diet works lies in the health of both her and her baby.

“Because I’ve documented my whole pregnancy, the evidence is there — it’s in my skin, in the way I carry myself, and it’s in my baby,” she said at the time.

“I put on 17 kilos when I was pregnant, but that was pretty much all baby and fluid. In the first two days after giving birth, 10 kilos dropped off me. I’m back into a bit of yoga and cycling now, too.

“I’m living proof that you don’t have to become a whale when you’re pregnant. You don’t have to put on heaps of weight and never bounce back — you can stay really healthy.”

And now that she’s pregnant with her second baby, the Instagram star is sticking to the same strict regime. Posting about her new pregnancy on the social media site, the blogger wrote:

“Sunrise bike rides, acai bowls and diamond ocean dips will give you this blissed out face #grateful #23weekspregnant #healthypregnancy #plantbased.”

Before reminding her followers to “think of the animals and the earth.”

“Ask yourself where your food has come from before you dish up your plates, think of others in need, embrace your loved ones, don’t eat s****y food for the sake of it, eat healthy, treat yourself but stay in control.”

Now that news of her second pregnancy is out there, no doubt Loni Jane is gearing up for the same dietary flack. Round Two. Ding Ding.
