Mumbai back atop IPL after crushing Chennai by 10 wickets
SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Mumbai Indians shot back to the top of the Indian Premier League and practically ended Chennai Super Kings' slim playoff hopes on Friday.
Chennai was cut down by fast bowlers Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah to 30-6 in the sixth over and rallied to 114-9. But opening batsmen Ishan Kishan and Quinton de Kock eclipsed that in 12.2 overs to win by 10 wickets.
Defending champion Mumbai started the IPL by losing to Chennai, but the teams immediately went in different directions. Mumbai's seventh win in 10 matches puts it atop the standings on net run rate, while Chennai remains last.
“It hasn’t been our year,” Chennai captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said. “Whether you lose by eight or 10 wickets, it hardly matters, but where we are at this stage of the tournament, it does hurt.”
Boult trapped Ruturaj Gaikwad for a duck in the first over, and in the second Bumrah got Ambati Rayudu caught down the leg side and Narayan Jagadeesan caught next ball in the slips. In the third, Faf du Plessis edged Boult behind on 1.
Boult came back in the sixth over, and Ravindra Jadeja mishit a pull straight to midwicket on 7, and Boult had 3-2 in 14 balls.
Chennai went from 21-5 to 30-6 after Dhoni edged behind on 16.
They were 43-7 in the ninth, but Sam Curran ensured the lowest IPL score of 49 was passed with his second six.
Curran prevented a sub-100 total for Chennai by reaching 52 from 46 balls but was out off the last ball to a Boult yorker. Boult earned 4-18 from four overs, Bumrah 2-25, and legspinner Rahul Chahar 2-22.
Kishan opened in place of Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma, who had a strained left hamstring. His partner, de Kock, got off the mark with a pair of boundaries in the first over, and Kishan matched him in the second.
Kishan hit Deepak Chahar for 4-4-6 over deep square, and de Kock hooked Shardul Thakur on to the stadium roof.
They reached 116 without loss with Kishan 68 not out from 37 balls, including five sixes and six boundaries. De Kock was 46 not out from 37 balls, including two sixes and five boundaries.
