Mum's Lesley Manville has joined the second season of Lennie James' powerful family drama Save Me, Sky Atlantic has confirmed.

The original six-part series followed Line of Duty star James as South Londoner Nelly, frantically searching for his estranged teenage daughter Jody after she vanishes from her family home. Doctor Foster's Suranne Jones starred alongside James as Claire, Nelly's former partner.

Manville will join the cast to play Jennifer, the wife of Adrian Edmondson's character Gideon. Jennifer is forced to make an almost impossible choice that will place her in direct conflict with Nelly, following the return of the vulnerable girl Grace (Olive Gray), who Nelly rescued whilst searching for his own daughter Jody.

The Harlots star said in a statement: "I couldn't be more delighted to be joining this phenomenal series. Save Me was a major highlight of 2018, a testament to Lennie James’ writing and acting and the exceptional cast and creative team."

Simon Heath, executive producer for World Productions, added: "We're delighted to welcome the brilliant Lesley Manville for the second instalment of Nelly Rowe’s gripping quest. A huge thanks to the Sky audience, who made Save Me the fastest binged Sky box set ever and to the Sky team, who have given Lennie’s unique vision such brilliant support from day one."

Jones will reprise her role as Claire, who in season two faces the grim possibilities of her daughter's fate after Nelly infiltrated a sex-trafficking ring where Jody was supposedly being imprisoned.

Stephen Graham returns as Nelly's friend Melon, who attempts to start a new life with his partner Bernie.

Other familiar faces include Thomas Coombes as Goz, Kerry Godliman as Teens, Nadine Marshall as DI O'Halloran, Susan Lynch as Stace and Jason Flemyng, contributing to the vibrant community that viewers came to know and love in the first series.

Series one became the most rapidly binged box-set in the broadcaster's history, meaning fans will be delighted to know filming for series two starts this month.

Save Me is available to watch on Sky Box Sets and to stream on NOW TV.
