Munich style beer at Oktoberfest, plus 5 more events happening in Brunswick

Bavarian-style Oktoberfest

Come celebrate in a Biergarten atmosphere, the ninth annual Oktoberfest. The event will consist of authentic food, Munich style beer, arm wrestling contest, masskrugstemmen (Bierstein holding) contest, hammer-schlagen contest, Alphine horn player, chicken dance (line dance), and many vendors. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Harbour Town Fest Band (a Bavarian style brass band). Oktoberfest will be held 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at 947 Carter Drive (behind the Calabash Fire Station 12), Calabash. The event will benefit Boy Scouts Troop 201 of Sunset Beach. American Legion Leland Post 68 meeting

The American Legion Leland Post 68 will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The general meeting begins at 6 p.m. in banquet building next to Blossoms restaurant, Magnolia Greens Golf Course,1800 Tommy Jacobs Drive, Leland. All veterans are welcome to attend.

Lane Adrian and Dale Todd, Post #68 service officers will gjve an update on a major Veterans assistance program, the Veterans Experience Action Center which assists Veterans with their VA CLAIMS., NC.

Attendees wishing to have dinner at Blossoms Restaurant prior to the meeting, should arrive no later than 4:45 pm.

Also please bring bags of Halloween candy to support Truck or Treat.

HOWL-A-Ween at the Haunted Village

Bring your pooch in costume and entered into the raffle in support of the Brunswick County Animals Services at HOWL-A-Ween at the Haunted Village, 5-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 at the Olde Southport Village Shoppes, 1102 N. Howe St., Southport.

Botanical garden open house

The Brunswick County Extension Master Gardeners Volunteer Association invites the public to its third annual open house, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 22. The Botanical Demonstration Garden is in the Brunswick County Government Complex at 25 Referendum Drive, Bolivia. Visitors can explore many of the plant options suitable for this area.

An Extension Master Gardener will be posted in each of the garden spaces.

  • Sunny and shade appeal gardens: Will help vistiors that have questions or need ideas about what to plant to enhance their home’s entrance.

  • Edible landscape design garden: WIll help with whats plants to enhance a front yard by ❛‘sneaking in❜ vegetables and fruits where least expected.

  • Sunny native and shady native gardens: These educational gardens will be of interest to anyone wanting to learn more about native plants in southeast North Carolina.

  • Pollinator walk garden: Draws in butterflies and bees.

  • The discovery garden: Will teach about plant identification with its ❛Bottle Trees❜ and invites participations to take a fun trip through its native honeysuckle tunnel.

  • Micro climate garden: Provides instant understanding of how sun, shade and temperature can affect the same plant.

  • Rain gardens: Have been in the news lately, and there will be two featured. Come learn how a rain garden can not only solve your water run-off problems but look attractive while doing it.

  • Rose garden: Many folks are told roses do not grow here in the coastal heat and humidity, but you will find more than 40 varieties, including drift roses, hybrid teas, floribundas and knock outs, many also providing outstanding fragrance.

  • Reflection garden: For ideas and suggestions to add relaxation to your garden, visit this garden with its Asian-inspired waterfall and small pond.

  • Live Oak garden: Another great restful spot is on the bench under the shade, surrounded by hydrangeas and camellias.

  • Azalea garden: If you are thinking about putting in a few azaleas, this garden has so many Encore Azaleas in bloom, making your color decision easier.

  • Celebration garden: Occasionally you can find a small wedding under way, but it is enjoyed year-round for its white and green color scheme.

  • Fragrance garden: This garden with it wonderful seasonal scents will entice you to linger longer.

Soil sample test kits will be available, and a small selection of plants will be available for sale.

Oak Island Elk Lodge Trunk or Treat

The Youth Committee of the Oak Island Elk Lodge, will be sponsoring a Trunk or Treat. Come dress in your best costume to this free event, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at 106 E. Dolphin Drive. There will be spooky treats, drinks, and games.

Oak Island❜s Live & Local Market, Music Series

Live & Local: Market plus music, presented by the town of Oak Island Recreation Department will feature a farmers' market and a live concert, with local food, and craft vendors, Saturday, Oct. 22 at Middleton Park, 4610 E. Dolphin Drive, Oak Island. The market will be held 4-8 p.m. and the concert will begin at 6 p.m. with the Salty Dawgs, a coastal Carolina band that plays a variety of music featuring rock, blues, pop, country and funk. Free.
