American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 2388 has endorsed former mayor Jamie Mayo in March 23 mayoral race.

"After an executive and body meeting, Local 2388 has announced our endorsement of the best mayoral candidate who has experience and ability to lead through extreme adversity and possesses genuine compassion for union workers," Local 2388 President Brian Drayton said at a press conference Monday at Monroe City Hall. "That candidate is former mayor Jamie Mayo."

Mayo, who served as mayor from 2001 to 2020, is currently running for mayor.

"[This endorsement] shows that anytime you have employees, this particular union that endorsing me, it shows that they're gravely dissatisfied with the administration − it's direction and it's lack of leadership to support them," Mayo said. "That's why it's huge to receive this endorsement from Local 2388 and so we're very, very pleased. It's a huge boost for our campaign."

Local 2388 represents Monroe City employees with the exception of fire, police, transit, operations and engineering.

The union alleges that under Mayor Friday Ellis's administration, the city has mistreated and harassed employees and failing to provide jobs for union workers despite being contracted to do so.

The primary will be held March 23.
