Council president Allen Mavrides, who will be sworn in as the new mayor on Friday, announced Dunton as the new chief on Tuesday. Council will vote whether to approve the appointment at a special meeting on Jan. 25.

Dunton joined the Munroe Falls Police Department in 2014 as a part-time officer and was promoted to sergeant about five years ago. He previously worked for the Stow Police Department for 35 years.

In November, he agreed to serve as interim chief following the retirement of Jerry Hughes. At the time, Dunton said he was not interested in serving in the position long-term.

"Allen [Mavrides] approached me and he wanted to keep uniformity in the city," Dunton said Tuesday. "I realized I'd been here seven years, so what's another two? I discussed it with my wife and family and we all agreed."

Dunton will be paid $82,500 annually.

Council also renewed law Director Tom Kostoff's contract. He will be paid $42,000. His contract also allows him to charge $175 per hour for litigation services in court and $125 an hour for public records services. The contract runs through Jan. 31, 2023.
