Murder suspect caught trying to move body at scene of deadly shooting, Florida cops say

A murder suspect was caught trying to move a person’s body at the scene of a deadly shooting, Florida officials said.

But witnesses spotted the man and “detained him until deputies arrived,” according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Now, the suspect is facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder. Deputies in an Oct. 22 news release didn’t list attorney information for the man, identified as 31-year-old Shannon Owens of Winter Haven.

The sheriff’s office responded to a shooting call late Oct. 21. When deputies got to the scene in Lakeland, they reported finding Owens “detained by several witnesses.”

The day of the shooting, officials said someone “made verbal contact” with Owens before he shot and killed them. The person who died wasn’t identified in the news release.

Deputies also didn’t share specific details about the shooting scene, telling McClatchy News in an email that identifying information surrounding the case was protected under state law. As of Oct. 22, the sheriff’s office said an investigation was ongoing.

In addition to second-degree murder, Owens faces a gun possession charge and several out-of-county warrants, according to officials.

Lakeland is roughly 35 miles east of Tampa.
