Murder trial underway for former Dallas cop

The murder trial for Amber Guyger got underway Monday in Dallas, Texas.

On September 6, 2018, Guyger allegedly shot and killed a neighbor, Botham Jean.

She was initially charged with manslaughter, in part because she told investigators she entered Jean's apartment by mistake and thought he was a burglar.

At the time, Guyger was a four year veteran of the Dallas police force and not on duty. The Dallas police chief fired her days after the sho oting.

The charges were upgraded to murder following protests against racial bias in law enforcement. Guyger was a white woman and Botham the victim an unarmed black 26-year-old male.

As the trial got underway, a prayer vigil was held outside the courthouse. Dr. Michael Waters is with the Joy Tabernacle A.M.E. Church.

"So the outcome of this trial is not just for Botham, not just for his family, not just for all those who love him, but in fact in a real sense on trial this week is whether or not black lives will matter in the City of Dallas."

Botham Jean's mother Allison is worried justice will not be served.

"It's dependent on so many human beings. It's dependent on a jury. It's dependent on the prosecution. It's dependent on the defense. It's dependent on several things. "

Texas District Judge Tammy Kemp has imposed a gag order for the criminal trial. She's also sequestered the jury.

If convicted of murder, Guyger faces life in prison. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
