Murkowski thanks Romney for his service, ‘even if he’s wrong about salmon!’

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is praising Sen. Mitt Romney after the Utah Republican announced his retirement, despite, she says, his preferred way to eat fish stinks.

“Grateful to serve with @SenatorRomney,” Murkowski wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday, “even if he’s wrong about salmon!”

Murkowski’s fishy dig came a day after Romney announced he wouldn’t seek reelection in 2024.

In an excerpt from a forthcoming biography on Romney published in The Atlantic shortly after the senator’s retirement announcement, journalist McKay Coppins recalled catching a glimpse inside the 76-year-old lawmaker’s fridge.

“On the day of my first visit, he showed me his freezer, which was full of salmon fillets that had been given to him by Lisa Murkowski, the senator from Alaska,” Coppins wrote.

“He didn’t especially like salmon,” Coppins said of Romney, “but found that if he put it on a hamburger bun and smothered it in ketchup, it made for a serviceable meal.”

Last year, Alaska’s salmon industry was valued at more than $720 million, according to the state’s Department of Fish and Game.
