Museum concert series features international award-winning musicians
Nov. 8—GRAND FORKS — Cellist Yi Qun Xu and pianist Yoon Lee will perform a concert of chamber music beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at the North Dakota Museum of Art on the UND campus.
The concert, second in a series of classical music concerts sponsored by the Myra Foundation, will include works by Beethoven, Janacek and Prokofiev.
Xu, recipient of the 2022 Presser Music Award, received first prize in the 2021 New York International Artists Cello Competition, among other top prizes in Chinese national cello competitions. She is a faculty member at The Juilliard School in New York City.
Lee, the Special Prize winner of the Anton G. Rubenstein International Piano Competition, is a soloist, chamber musician and faculty member at SUNY Purchase and the Heifetz International Music Institute, and a staff pianist for The Juilliard School. She has performed on the stages of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

The North Country Fiddle and Dance group is hosting a "Harvest Dance" from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the East Grand Forks Senior Center, 538 Rhinehard Dr.
All ages — including singles, couples and families — are invited. Donations will be accepted at the door.
Various dances, such as reels, squares, circle mixers and more, will be taught and are easy to learn, said Jeanne O'Neil, who'll be performing live music with the O'Neil Family Band.

The Northern Valley Youth Orchestras will present a variety of music in concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Empire Arts Center.
The two student orchestras will perform works that highlight various instruments and other elements of symphonic music. The Philharmonic Orchestra is led by Kara Hartten and assistant Katie Svendson, and the Symphony Orchestra by Kevin Sutterlin, with assistance from Sarah Harlow.
"This is our first concert in our 'home' building since March 2020," said Naomi Welsh, NVYO executive director.
The program will include Stella Sung's "Rockwell Reflections," each movement of which is inspired by a Norman Rockwell painting; "American Landscape," by Soon Hee Newbold; segments of Igor Stravinsky's 1919 "Firebird Ballet Suite"; arrangements of Grieg's "Peer Gynt Suite"; and Strauss' famous "Radetsky March".
NVYO's Crescendo Chamber Music ensembles will perform before the concert.
A reception will follow the concert.
Tickets will be sold at the door, at a minimum suggested general admission of $5, or attendees may contribute what they can, Welsh said.
The UND Department of Theatre Arts opens the 2022-23 season with "Carrie: The Musical" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 10-12, at the Burtness Theatre. Performances will continue nightly Nov. 17-19.
The play is based on the popular cult classic 1976 horror film. The story is told from the perspective of a fellow high school student who witnesses Carrie's iconic prom night massacre, said Brad Reissig, associate chair of theatre arts. As she describes the moments leading up to the final destructive episode, students appear as if they are memories.
Horror fans take note, the performance "is a wild, rock 'n' roll ride of good versus evil, and devastatingly gory revenge," Reissig said.

The North Dakota chapter of Women Who Explore, or WWE, will sponsor a free three-hour hike through Turtle River State Park beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12.
Participants are invited to meet in the parking lot at the park, which is located near Arvilla, North Dakota, about 20 miles west of Grand Forks on Highway 2. A North Dakota state park permit is required. Visit

The route of the hike, suitable for all levels of hikers, will follow a well-connected trail system. Participants should sign an e-waiver before attending their first Women Who Explore event. The form is available at

All registered hikers are required to carry a personal hygiene kit, including a mask or face-covering and hand sanitizer. They may also bring water, snacks and sunscreen or bug spray.
The WWE ambassadors are not wilderness first-aid certified. This is a casual get-together for outdoor enthusiasts, organizers say.
