Museum shares history of iconic Louisiana drink. Where to get a Sazerac in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Did you know there is a museum dedicated to Louisiana’s most iconic drink?

The Sazerac House General Manager, Brie Cruz, said the Sazerac Cocktail can be dated back to 1852.

“It is said that a drink was made with the Sazerac de Forge cognac, Peychaud’s Bitters, Absinthe, sugar and lemon,” Cruz said. “The recipe has changed a bit over the years and now features Sazerac Rye Whiskey in place of the cognac and Herbsaint in place of Absinthe, but the overall feel of the drink is very similar.”

The museum is inspired by the original Sazerac House from the 1800s. It has three floors of exhibits. Guests can learn about the history of the city of New Orleans through its cocktails.

“We are a free visitor experience for our general tour and an amazing starting point for any visit to New Orleans,” Cruz said.

The museum hosts three tasting events per day with different themes.

“We currently offer a Tropical Cocktails class, which features rum-based drinks, a Whiskey Grid Tasting, which features different types of whiskey from the Sazerac company portfolio and, of course, a Sazerac Cocktail tasting class, featuring the Sazerac Cocktail,” Cruz said.

The museum is in the Big Easy. However, you can get a Sazerac cocktail in Baton Rouge at places like The Gregory and Hayride Scandal.

Rouj Creole’s Sazerac has Lafayette V.S.O.P, Simple Syrup, Peychaud’s Bitters and Absinth for $16.

Mid City Beer Garden

If you want something different at Mid City Beer Garden, they sell a Sazerac cocktail for $10.

SoLou

SoLou’s Sazerac is made with Sazerac Rye Whiskey, Peychaud’s Bitters, Simple and Absinthe for $13.

Tallulah Crafted Food and Wine Bar

Steen’s Cane Sazerac is $15 and has Sazerac Rye, Korbel, Herbsaint, Steen’s Cane Syrup, Peychaud’s and Orange Bitters.

Beausoleil Coastal Cuisine

It’s a classic for a reason. Beausoleil’s Sazerac is $14 and made with Sazerac Rye, simple syrup, Herbsaint, Peychaud’s bitters and lemon twist.
