MUSEUMS: Trolley Museum to host Superhero and Princess Day

Aug. 18—EAST WINDSOR — The Connecticut Trolley Museum, 58 North Road (Route 140), invites guest to dress up as their favorite superhero or princess on Saturday, Aug. 20.

Spider-Man and Ariel will be roaming the museum grounds from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and visitors can make their own superhero mask or princess crown.

Enjoy a trolley ride operated by period-dressed motormen and learn from them about the trolley they operate and the history of the museum. Tour the main display hall, check out the souvenirs in the gift shop, and visit the Fire Truck Museum.

Visitors can also climb aboard stationary trolleys to take the controls and let your imagination "operate."

At the craft station, make a motorman hat, create your own trolley fare ticket and make finger print paper trolley cars.

Every Tuesday during the summer, Storytime Trolleys will feature stories about the adventures of trolleys and trains at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Admission is $11 for adults, with discounts for seniors, youths, and children. Admission is free for children younger than 2 and museum members.

Somers

The Somers Historical Museum, 11 Battle St. will host Paul Martinello for a living history presentation on World War One on Sunday, Aug 21, from 1-3 p.m.

Martinello returns in uniform with his display on the war which includes original equipment as well as items from the French army, which fought alongside American combat units.

Admission is free for this outdoor, weather-permitting event.

East Hartford

The East Hartford Historical Society's Huguenot House Museum in Martin Park is open Sundays from 1-4 p.m. through Aug. 28. Martin Park is at 307 Burnside Ave.

The 1761 Makens Bemont House, also known as the Huguenot House, is restored to its original 18th-century appearance with period furnishings.

There is also the 1821 Goodwin Schoolhouse and the 1850 Burnham Blacksmith Shop. Tours are free, donations are accepted.

Springfield Museums

The Springfield Museums present "Nature Cat: Backyard and Beyond" through Sept. 4, in the Springfield Science Museum.

This hands-on, immersive, bilingual (Spanish and English) exhibit will inspire families and children to understand that nature discovery can happen anywhere — even in their own backyards.

—Also through Sept. 4, the Michele and Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts presents "Washi Transformed: New Expressions in Japanese Paper."

This must-see exhibit demonstrates the transformation of a traditional medium into breath-taking and visionary contemporary art.
