Placing a football bet would be a lot easier if the underdog never won, right?

Just ask the country stars who notched a season-opening loss in the new Music City Survivor League (thanks largely to the Bears winning Sunday afternoon's slush bowl and Broncos timeclock malpractice in Monday Night Football — woof).

Chris Young and Natalie Grant's hopes of a week one win evaporated with the Broncos' clock management skills on Monday night; Scotty McCreery landed on the wrong side of Sunday's wild Bengals-Steelers overtime match-up; the Carolina Panthers did *not* lead Matt Stell to an opening week win; and two singers — Old Dominon's Matthew Ramsey and LOCASH's Chris Lucas — were led astray by Trey Lance and the 49ers in Chicago.

To raise a flag on the time-tested adage: That's why you play the game.

Survivor League week one wasn't all heartbreak, of course. The Miami Dolphins didn't make Darius Rucker cry; a handful of artists cashed in on the Ravens blowing out the Jets and Jelly Roll rode the buzzy Philadelphia Eagles to a win in Detroit.

NFL Week 2:Tennessee Titans vs. Buffalo Bills betting odds: Titans big underdogs against Josh Allen

This week, Rucker puts his faith in the Cleveland Browns, while Stell and Wilson bet on the Broncos bouncing back against the Houston Texans. Breland believes the Bengals should handle the Dak Prescott-less Dallas Cowboys, and Natalie Grant hopes to score her first win with Matt Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams beating the Atlanta Falcons.

Read on for a full look at this week two picks.

About the Tennessean's Music City Survivor League

Country music fandom and NFL nerd-ery collide with the inaugural Music City Survivor League, a bragging rights tournament for the biggest football geek on Music Row. Artists pick one team a week each week of the NFL season. If that team wins or ties? They move on. If that team loses? They're in trouble.

We'll play double-elimination. If your favorite artist chokes this week, they still have a fighting chance. No artist can pick the same team twice in a season. Last musician standing wins the league.

Follow along each week via Tennessean.com or in our weekly music newsletter, The Pick.
