Music, dance, hot topics & ospreys: 13 top things to do on Cape Cod Sept. 16-22

Current events are in the forefront of a few top events this week, as local groups look at the effects of recent times. A dance troupe celebrates renewal following pandemic isolation, poets and artists come together to raise money for Planned Parenthood's abortion fight, and a professor explains the history behind what's happening in Ukraine.

Concerts this week include the Cape Symphony starting its season on a Mozart note, musicians on porches in Sandwich, an open mic night in Yarmouth Port and the Courante quartet celebrating baroque music in theater.

Among other highlights are Estuaries Day being celebrated in Waquoit; Smithsonian Day being celebrated in Cotuit, with an author and more; actress Brooke Adams discussing a movie from her past; an author talking about her new book and bisexuality; a lecture on Cape ship captains, and a tour of Truro's cemeteries. Poets and artists support Planned Parenthood

Voices of Poetry will host a “For Our Rights” program as a benefit for Planned Parenthood and what organizers describe as that nonprofit's “ongoing struggle for reproductive freedom.” The event will feature the work of six poets: Robert Carr, Martin Jude Farawell, Laurel Peterson, Tzynya L. Pinchback, Heather Treseler and Ellen Dore Watson. There will also be music by singers/songwriters Diana Di Gioia and Gabriella Simpkins, and folksinger Mary Ann DeMello. The Voices of Poetry event, organizers say, was put together following the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision reversing the 50-year-old Roe v. Wade decision that guaranteed the right to abortion, and to protest “the various attacks by state legislatures on women’s reproductive freedom.” Attendees are asked to wear a face mask (regardless of vaccination status).

Here local debut was postponed by the pandemic. In these concerts, she will perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5, and, Pak says, “her talent will astonish the audience.” The program will also include “Mozartiana: Theme and Variations (Based upon Piano Variations by Mozart on a Theme by Gluck)” by Tchaikovsky and that composer’s Fourth Symphony.
